Dental Exams & Cleanings

What is Included in a Dental Exam? The average dental exam includes:

  •     An evaluation of your oral hygiene and general health.
  •     A risk evaluation of tooth decay and gum disease.
  •     Check your bite and jaw for any issues.
  •     An assessment of your need for fluoride.
  •     Discuss the cosmetic look of your teeth and create a plan.
  •     Take x-rays and discuss other diagnostic procedures, if necessary.
  •     A demonstration of proper dental hygiene techniques.

When to Get Dental X-Rays?

Regular dental exams are an important part of preventive health care. Suggested time between dental X-Rays varies by age and risk. Children and adolescents at high risk of cavities should have an x-ray done every six months until there is no sign of decay. Kids with low risk can have as little as one X-Ray every two years. Adults at high risk should have X-Rays done every 6 – 12 months until there is no decay present. Those with low risk should have them done every 18 – 36 months on average.

How Often Should I have Dental Exam and Cleaning?

On average, visiting a dentist twice a year works well for most people. However people at high risk of cavities should consider more frequent visits like every three to four months. Due to growing evidence linking oral health with general health, it is wise to determine how many visits are best for you with your dentist.

What is the Average Cost of a Dental Exam and Cleaning?

Average check-up and cleaning costs vary. Dentists charge different rates depending on your situation and location. In most cases a standard exam including x-rays and cleaning, costs about $280 – $325.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Exams and Cleanings?

Most dental plans cover preventative care 100%. Preventative care usually includes two office visits per year. If more office visits are recommended by your dentist then you will more than likely be responsible for a co-pay which varies by dental plan. However on average most dental plans cover approximately 85% of the cost, though some plans have just a set amount for each service required.
